Symptoms of Cooling System Trouble

Cooling system leaks are often to blame for overheating. One sign of a coolant leak is that your coolant warning light has flashed on. You also might have a leak if you check your coolant level and see that it has gotten concerningly low for no good reason. If you have an external coolant leak, then you may see colorful fluid on the ground where you've been parked. Commonly, coolant is green, but yours might be a different color like pink, orange, or yellow. If you have an internal coolant leak, then you may see a lot of white smoke coming from your tailpipe, which could indicate a blown head gasket.

There's also cause for concern with your cooling system if your temperature gauge has risen into the red zone, which could occur shortly before serious trouble arises. With a high reading on your temp gauge, it's best to find a safe place to pull over, such as a parking lot. Then you can call up the shop, explain what's happening, and get advice on whether your vehicle seems like it can be driven any further. If your situation calls for you to add coolant, then you'll want to make sure you let your engine cool off before doing so. If you open the cap to add coolant while your engine is still hot, the scaldingly hot fluid may spray up at you.
