Common Causes of No-Start We Can Repair at Our Winter Haven Auto ShopWhen you notice that your vehicle isn't firing up like it normally does, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop. If you delay, then you risk the problem getting worse and ultimately preventing your car from starting at all. At Cypress Tire & Car Care Center, our Winter Haven mechanics are experts at identifying and fixing problems that cause no-start.

What is preventing my car from starting?

In many cases, the car won't start due to problems with the battery/charging system. While leaving your headlights on is one of the better-known causes of a dead battery, there are also several other common reasons why batteries die, such as old age, loose/corroded connections, parasitic draws, and a bad alternator. Symptoms of alternator failure include malfunctioning interior electrical accessories (such as power seats and radio), flickering/dimming headlights, and an illuminated dashboard warning light that reads ALT or GEN or comes on in the shape of a little glowing battery.

A bad starter can also prevent your engine from firing up. There's a good chance you have a starter problem if your engine won't start, but your dash lights illuminate and you hear a clicking sound. With a faulty starter, you could also hear a grinding noise.

Issues related to fuel supply also commonly cause no-start. With a failing fuel pump, fuel won't be properly directed to your engine. Indications of a bad fuel pump include engine sputtering/surging, worsening gas mileage, and a whining noise emerging from the gas tank. Your engine may also have trouble firing up if fuel injectors are dirty. Using a fuel additive can be helpful with eliminating contaminants from injectors and intake valves. Also, a clogged fuel filter can cause problems with getting your engine to start. It's best to replace your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles so that you don't have such problems.
